Shoot Out by Kaycee Maye Photography & One Three Events

Summer Garden Shoot Out with Kaycee Maye Photography and One Three Events

Kaycee Maye Photography hosted a Shoot Out here at Historic Seven Sycamores in August 2019. We are excited to show you some of the behind the scenes of her three part shoot out with One Three Events. Kaycee was kind enough to give us her perspective of the shoot out as host a guest author for this feature. Scroll to enjoy her thoughts and photography of the event!

I’m Kaycee, a wedding and elopement photographer based in Central California and with Lauryn and Summer of One Three Events, a modern wedding planning company, this past August we got the chance to host a three part shoot out at the Historic Seven Sycamores Ranch in Ivanhoe, CA. If you’re a photographer or an event company looking to host any kind of event, Historic Seven Sycamores should be at the TOP of your list! We had an amazing time planning this shootout with them, their communication was top notch and we can only imagine how well they treat their brides! We even had some extra excitement at the end of the day and Taylor and the staff handled everything like the professionals they are!

Planning a shootout is NOT for the faint of heart. There is a lot of moving parts, hard decisions,  emails, questions, and more. This was our first shootout together, and we went a little wild. We had three couples, a flat lay detail station, and I made new headshots for all of our attendees! We really wanted to create a day to get as much good content as possible, and over the next few months we’ll be diving into each shoot and breaking down our inspiration and execution!

For our airstream lovers shoot, we were inspired by those summer camp, retro, comfy vibes. Brian and Victoria had just tied the knot in the azores (HOW COOL ARE THEY?!)  and were so perfectly in love, it made it so so easy to photograph them! Setting up for the photos, we opted to open the windows and let in as much natural light as possible since trailers have a tendency to be a little dark. We used a big white fluffy duvet, cozy pillows, and some potted house plants to make it a little more cozy comfy. Once we got the photographers in place, it wasn’t long before things got all kinds of hot in there (literally, it was like 95 in there). We needed to move it outside! Stockroom Pics provided the cutest little outdoor set up with vintage chairs, a sisal rug, and moroccan poofs that really made the HSSR driveway feel like the great outdoors!

A quick tip if you are considering hosting a shoot out:

Try to find real couples that still really really like each other! If she’s into it and he’s hating life it will show on his face.

One Three Events was right on trend going with shades of blue, since the 2020 pantone color of the year is Classic Blue I like to think Lauryn and Summer were just that far ahead of the game! Two Little Doves’ neon was such a fun addition to HSSR’s gorgeous west lawn. PHOTOGRAPHERS DO NOT SLEEP ON THE WEST LAWN!! The lighting is so yummy and the way the trees tower over the vine wall makes your photos feel like they were taken in an enchanted garden! Take advantage of everything HSSR has to offer, the barn, the orchard, everything is so unique and easy to work with!

Rachel and Brooke are two of the coolest people I have ever worked with, they made everything so effortless and rocked the Daughters of Simone gowns like the bosses they are! I really wanted to get that effortless, wispy love feel from them and they killed it. Adding the neon from Two Little Doves in was the perfect touch to make everything Lauryn and Summer designed come to life. I’ve always loved the gazebo in the garden side of Historic Seven Sycamores, so we had to use it for the cake cutting! (every wedding I have been to at HSSR has had the cake cutting in the gazebo and I love that, it’s like a little tradition!) Rachel Makes I KILLED the cake! It was art deco meets modern and I can still taste it, so yummy and absolutely perfect to photograph! The lighting under the gazebo can be a little tricky, but if theres enough light you can see if the staff can shut the light off for just a second or adjust your white balance to make up for it!

Daughters of Simone is a locally owned (Fresno) bohemian bridal line that is TO DIE FOR! If your brides are looking for something that is both timeless and insanely unique, these gowns are everything. E V E R Y T H I N G. They lend an air of romance that not many boho gowns have, they’re as impactful as they are beautiful!

Our sunset bridal segment, omg. Where do I even START?! I have been OBSESSED with Rue de Seine for like four years, and getting the chance to use one for a shoot out was a dream come true. We really wanted the gown to speak for itself and not steal the show, so we opted to keep the sunset segment minimal. We needed the right girl to rock this gown, and Tanner Matthewson was the woman! Not only is Tanner an insanely talented hair artist who has created stunning looks for SO many brides, she’s a badass mama with multiple passions and a killer blog! We kept her husband Blake in a Johnny Cash inspired black on black on black tux, which I am STILL so into! Her look combined with the “Avril” was the perfect storm, but I wanted just one more thing to tie it all together. Enter: the headpiece. A few years back, the Met Gala theme was “Heavenly Bodies” and everyone rocked these insane gowns with golden halo hair pieces. I remembered a stylist who was interviewed for Blake Lively’s look saying that the headpiece was zip ties, a headband, and gold spray paint. So I went down to the dollar store (no joke) and got to work! It turned out better than I anticipated and was exactly what I envisioned! The florals from Picked Floristry were the perfect end of summer pop of color, and I love that they made such a bold bouquet! Don’t be afraid of color ya’ll! Blush and white are beautiful but sometimes a wedding needs color!

The Historic Seven Sycamore’s tree drive is iconic. If you shoot there and don’t use the tree drive what are you even doing…? I’m kidding, a little. The tree drive runs east and west and is beautifully shaded at all times of the day, it’s so versatile! I can’t stress this enough: take a minute to explore the venue. There are so many hidden gems that are easily looked over!

A quick tip if you are considering hosting a shoot out:

Even if your idea seems off the wall, try it! Don’t stifle your creativity because no one else is doing it. If you’re into it that’s all that matters!

vendors for sunset bridal:

gown: rue de seine avril from moondance bridal, rented from a private party

Thank you all so much for checking out our shootout, and a huge thank you to Historic Seven Sycamores, Taylor, the attendees and all of the incredible vendors that came together to make this shoot come together!

we cannot wait to do it all over again!!
